A tournament day with Javier and Rob, Galveston Redfish Series
With all the big tournaments in town the previous weeks, we decided our best bet would be the Galveston jetty system. We launched the boat at a very very early 5:00 am. We slowly made our way to the jetties in the darkness of early morning. Once we neared the jetties we shut down, got the rest of our gear ready and waited for a mother nature to turn on the lights. As soon as we could see, we blasted off towards the jetties and went through the boat cut to be greeted with a slick calm Gulf of Mexico. We made our way to the end of the jetty and started fishing. We knew it was going to be tough day, but Javier got the day started off by sightcasting to what he though was a red fish. Only to be let down when he reeled in a 2 foot shark. Moments later, I hook up to a solid jetty red and by 6:30 am we have our first 26" red fish in the livewell. We fish the area hard and out of 5 or 6 tournament boats, we were the only ones around to catch a red fish, by 9:00 am we decided to go look for our second fish in the Galveston marsh.
We arrive at one of my honey holes and the second cast I land a nice 25 inch speckled trout. We keep pushing into the marsh and by 9:30 am Javier hooks up to our second redfish of the day. We continued to push back towards a back lake, once we get to the lake the fishing turns on. For the next two hours, the topwater action was non stop, Javier and I managed to cull through 8-9 reds. We ended up leaving the marsh with a little under 13 pounds of red fish. Time was running out and we needed to start heading back to the weigh in.
We arrive at the weigh-in and weigh our fish, 12.15 pounds. I guess one of our red fish decided to loose a little weigh on the boat ride back, but our weigh was good enough for an 8th place finish. With an 8th place finish we feel pretty confident in making a run at Team of the Year. Two more stops to go........See you on the water.
